5 Programs People Need to Stop Using
1. Limewire: This is probably the biggest BS program there is. On any given day, I can enter any artist/song name into the search field only to receive 10-15 “Get Laid Now!” hits, 5-10 “_____ gets punked!” ones, and 3-4 hits for content that was actual relevant to what I was searching for. No, I do not want to get laid and, no, I’m not interested in downloading whatever .exe file that magically pops up when you click said search result. This programme sucks, stop being a wuss and move on to torrents.
2. Gimp: Look, I know people use and enjoy this program, but that’s mainly for two reasons. The first reason is that it’s free and the second reason is because it’s all these people have ever used. How many people have you seen start out in Photoshop and then switch to Gimp? None. Just as my grandmother swears by her crappy greeting card software, people swear by Gimp. In my opinion, is the worst example of open-source. Sure, if you’re a good artist you can make do with Gimp. But for people starting out, Gimp is one of the worst things to start out using. Let me do you all a favour (those of you who use it), go to the Adobe site and download the CS3 trial. I hate to say it, but I have never seen any really good work come out of Gimp. Please, please stop using it.
3. Norton Anti-virus: As if this couldn’t be the utmost worst choice in virus protection programs, it is seen on millions of computers. Symantec’s host of overall useless programs like “Crash Guard” and “Anti-Bot” only exist to usurp money from middle-aged computer-illiterate morons who think that they will undoubtedly be victims of identity theft if they do not shell out money to this evil corporation. Better yet, if any of its patrons receives an inkling of wisdom and decides to choose another virus protection product, Norton stonewalls the action by disallowing the Unistall software from removing many of its components. Cheap. Very cheap.
4. Windowblinds: I know most of you will not like this as my fourth choice, but too bad. Windowblinds is a rubbish product that follows the same tactics as Symantec when it comes to attempting to uninstall the program. Windowblinds is the type of program that your little brother installs on your computer because he wants to have the UltimateNinja3000 skin to appear in red and black everywhere ad nauseum. You curse at him and attempt to uninstall the program so that he can no longer toy around with the blessed familiarity of the Windows XP default silver skin ONLY TO REALISE THAT IT WON’T UNINSTALL. Well, that’s super. As if things couldn’t get any worse, he’s now found the icon unpackager and Stardock. Thanks a lot, jerks.
5. AOL Instant Messanger: It is the year 2008. How about you make a New Year’s resolution for yourself to evolve from the primitive instant messaging service known as AIM to the ultimately superior one known as MSN. Yes, I know that leaving behind that certain cute emoticon with the wagging tongue and cute shiny eyes will be hard, but you’ll ultimately become a better person for it. Even better, there will be something called privacy in this new-and-improved instant messaging service. Believe it or not, people who are not on your buddy list can’t actually stalk you like they can on AIM! That world has become a better place ever since AOL lost its stranglehold on internet users. Make the most of it.
There’s my list. Do you think any others should/shouldn’t be on here?

“Windowblinds is the type of program that your little brother installs on your computer because he wants to have the UltimateNinja3000 skin to appear in red and black everywhere ad nauseum”
IT WAS JUST THE ONCE. GOD DAMN IT, NEVER BLOODY LET THINGS GO.

So what do I do when my CS3 trial is over and I can’t aford to buy it?

Excellent artist that uses GIMP.
January 15th, 2008 at 11:53 am
Be a man and get a keygen.
Also, I didn’t say that it was impossible to make good art in Gimp. I just said that I’ve never seen any good art come out of it. Plus, the link you sent me isn’t loading thanks to dA’s gloriously crappy servers.
January 15th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
I understand all reasons except GIMP. GIMP and PS do the same thing, but GIMP is free.
January 15th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
PS is free in some places as well.
Hint hint, wink wink.
January 15th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Yeah. Most of the people complaining here either haven’t tried Photoshop or haven’t used it long enough. Gimp requires you to put in add-ons in able to do some of the things that are already included in PS. Overall, as I said, Gimp produces mediocre work.
January 15th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
MQ’s racist because GIMP has a dog and Photoshop uses a blue box.
Nah.
GIMP is getting better. There’s no reason as to hating GIMP just because it looks different. Let’s not forget people who use Linux also.
Limewire, yeah. I get that. I deal with it though. Sorting by the artists/albums helps. It’s not terribly annoying.
Not to mention I use GIMP. Your quote says anything I do art-wise is not good. I feel unloved.
January 15th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
The reason I say that I don’t see anything good coming out of Gimp is because most people ditch Gimp and use Photoshop.. leaving many amateur artists to experiment on Gimp. With that said, after using Gimp for 3 days, I find it more than just design that annoys me. It takes more than just a simple shortcut to do things. Switching between three windows to control my layer palette, toolbox, and canvas is just ridiculous. I don’t see how anyone puts up with this program. If you want to do little doodles, it’s fine. But for anything beyond the basics, it’s just not practical.
January 16th, 2008 at 12:05 am
Yeah. What should I do when PS CS3 trial is done…it’s how much again???
Will you give it to us?
I like gimp and it’s free! And it has photoshop tools and more. you should’ve give a justifiable answer on why we shouldn’t use gimp.
January 16th, 2008 at 12:47 am
I like how you conveniently skipped over two comments advising you what to do when your CS3 trial runs out. Don’t knock something you’re not willing to try. I’ve tried Gimp, and believe me, I find it amazing that people can tolerate working with it. Sadly, it just doesn’t make strong tool for creating things compared to Photoshop.
January 16th, 2008 at 3:26 am
GIMP works on less-able computers, when I used a keygen to get CS2 I found it impossible to work with because I only had 256 RAM.
January 16th, 2008 at 4:16 am
Well, then, Munky, your computer sucks. Gimp is terrible. As for the person above who said something about linux - firstly, it’s possible to run Photoshop under Linux with Wine. Second, there’s a program called Pixel which is quite a bit like Photoshop. It does cost, but it’s one heck of a lot cheaper than Photoshop. Also, why are you all so f*cking moral? Just pirate photoshop…
As for the rest - Limewire, yeah that sucks, Torrent things instead.
Norton - yeah, I’ve always hated norton. AVG does the job fine.
Windowblinds - god damnit I don’t understand why people still use this either, some even *buy* it. Uxtheme patcher anyone?
AIM - Well, I hate AOL. I’d never use any of their products or services, out of priciple, and duty as a nerd.
There is something i’d like to add, though - IE.
January 16th, 2008 at 7:29 am
I’m just saying, Matt, that if you’ve got a crap computer then GIMP is your best option.
(and for the record, my computer doesn’t suck… anymore)
January 16th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
100% agree with everything on this list
January 17th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
3. Norton Anti-virus:
I hate it. Pc world (were i got my laptop) Said “you need this” and gave it to me. I installed it and then everything on my computer goes wrong (I mean like everything). Pc world said “some people have also had problems with this. The laptops came with a pre-installed older version that conflicted with the new one. go to *link* to download the uninstaller for theold one”. I said “Great thanks, but because of this you just srewed up my internet so I can’t get it!!” I went to pc world and they gave me a disc with it on.
Really a rant about pc world but it involved norton =)
January 17th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
i mostly agree with you mq. just bored so ima type my own oppinions in a huge comment k? k.
limewire is technically an illegal program, so piss on anyone who actually uses it. pay for your damn music please.
eh, i started on photoshop in a digital art beginners class, but never got it on my home computer. i’m too cheap to pay for it, so i use gimp, although, tbh, i’ve never done anything big in gimp, i still use ms paint for most things ^_^ like my current signature
norton is a pain in the ass to be honest. of the two virus software programs on my laptop when i got it, i had spysweeper and norton anti. they both ran out, so i bought norton. after i bought it, it then tells me theres a new version i can buy… bull shit. a month ago i get a message telling me there are known problems with spysweeper and my computer (vista on a vaio). the sad thing is, spysweeper picks up more than norton, despite it being expired and incompatible. ffs.
anyone have any suggestions of a good antivirus program to have? i’ll put it on my list of things to do when my norton subscription runs out next year.
never heard of windowblinds, don’t care about it
yes, aim is a terrible mesenger service. it is visually unappealing and limited in its functions. get windows live messenger, previously known as msn instant messenger, or die in the slums of internet cafes.
theres my 200 cents on the matter.
January 18th, 2008 at 5:30 am
No offence but why do you care if other people use these programs or not?
I can understand GIMP if you’re rating people’s art.
Other than that I don’t understand how it will affect you.
January 18th, 2008 at 7:39 am
On the contrary, why do you correct people’s spelling on the forum? I mean… how does it affect you?
January 18th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
I’m the one reading what they’ve misspelled, not that it matters.
I don’t tend to do it in a non-spam forum, only in the Sandbox if I’m in that kind of mood.
I’ve answered yours, will you answer mine?
January 18th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
It’s actually got a simple answer:
Things do not have to affect me in order for me to care. I wasn’t aware that life worked that way. Global warming doesn’t really affect me in any distinguishable way to my senses, yet I care about it. As this is my own blog where I may write about various things that I care about, the nature of WHY I care is irrelevant. The really interesting question is why do you care enough to reply here asking why I care?
January 18th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Just curious.
January 18th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Nothing wrong with Limewire. Just mark the spam as junk and move on.
I don’t really care on the whole GIMP vs. PS debate, but I will throw in that $0 seems a bit better than $650…
January 18th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Limewire just needs some tweaking.
Increce junk detection level, and only use the ‘audio’ category.
January 19th, 2008 at 5:00 am
Pirate Photoshop anyone? The irony is, I donwloaded it from LimeWire.
Add IE to the list and like, yeah.
January 21st, 2008 at 4:26 pm
I’m surprised GIMP made the list…
January 21st, 2008 at 5:54 pm
AIM > MSN.
:/
January 22nd, 2008 at 9:49 am
I use Limewire if i want one specific song, because it’s ridiculous looking for torrents on that. Otherwise, yes it does suck.
I agree with GIMP thing, though, and people who say “it can do the same as Photoshop” can gtfo. How many professional artists use GIMP instead of Photoshop? NONE. GIMP is amatuerish. And like Matthew said, JUST PIRATE PHOTOSHOP. And it’s quite ironic, because all you need anyway is just the trial version and keygen which you can get from a little search on google.
It’s not like you get arrested for using a full version of PS.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:57 am
Why did you not put Internet Explorer on the list? SHAME
July 19th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
I started out with Photoshop illegally copied from a friend, but then I got my laptop and I’m literally too stupid to find a key to get my 30-day version to work. (I tried. All the things I found on the first, second, third, and tenth page of the google search were useless). I’m content with gimp for my purposes.
I’m getting kind of angry with limewire. I started downloading torrents or just not bothering to download at all.
