Assistance and Blond Keyboards
So! The assist system came out today. I really like the idea of it and it completely came out of nowhere. It’s clear that Jagex sees that there is a disparity between lower-level and higher-level players and they’re finally doing something about it. Rewarding players for helping each other isn’t new to gaming, many MMO games have some sort of system or quest designed for players to rely on each other and it’s about time Runescape added something like this. The only way I can see this being misused is by people who are über-newbies who think that “assist” means they can ask normal players for FREE GP PLZ.
I hope they add info about the assist system to Tutorial Island as well, if they haven’t already. It’s something that can be great as long as people can work together.
Blond Keyboards
Yes, in Russia, a keyboard specifically made for blondes have emerged on store shelves.
Each function key has a little description on it about what to do and the ESC key simply says “No!” on it. It can be yours for only 16 EUR (about 25 USD). Is this thing pointless, or what? Read more about it here.

I wonder if they make aryan keyboards. You know, blue buttons, blond background colour.

Oh and reading the actual article:
“Maria Arbatova, a celebrated Russian feminist writer, is sure that blonde people should sue the makers. “What’s next? A keyboard for Jews? A keyboard for Blacks? A keyboard for deaf-mutes?” – she asks.”
Jewish Keyboard? ohhh so many crappy racist jokes spring to mind.

I hate the assist system. So now instead of 100 macroers cutting tree we have 100 noobs asking “Assist please”. Oh and they they ask wcing level and when you say yours they run up to you and say “Assist, assist” or “Y wont u assist me!” Because you are f*** g** a** noob that is why. Go find a big deep hole and throw yourself into it.” As far as I’m concerned I am not going to help any 11 year old who doesn’t have the patience and time to raise their own level. Crap man, I mean any lvl 50 skill take about two days (except maybe rcing and prayer) go and work a little, and stop bugging me for wcing levels! I wish Jagex would toss this stupid feature in the trash heap. I didn’t gain all these levels so I could be bothered by some annoying preteen.

The person you’re assisting doesn’t get any experience while you assist them, you get the XP.
November 8th, 2007 at 3:19 pm
Alternatively you could always not bitch about it.
It’s actually a good idea, can give a whole lot new on experience gaining. (ex: multiple fletchers, multiple fishers, multiple nature rune makers)

FFS if you are going to insult someone use you real user name!
And Mq…I don’t care who gets the xp…in fact who care. What does experience mean anymore if you can just go get a level in 10 minutes. I can cut yews forever now with a level 1 yew cutter. This will drive down prices as well. It just kills the spirit of the game. The one safe gaurd against 10 year olds was that they don’t have the patience to gain levels…now they don’t need patience they can just ask someone. Plus it is annoying as hell in Edgy to have a million people clamoring “Assist me, assist me plz”. I don’t like playing with a load of people in game, especially those that ask “how many yews do you have” “Wow you are rich!” “Can I have money plz” “your such a noob” (and that is the usual progression).
Why doesn’t Jagex make a game for toddlers while they are at it.
Ethically, I am bound not to be able to use this system. In my mind if you don’t earn it…it isn’t yours. Same way with tests, even if the teacher gives a generous curve you shouldn’t take it. Thus having noobs asking me for help all day is really annoying.

Level 1 yew cutter? You mean level-3 Woodcutter, or level-60 Woodcutter. Do you even know how to play?
And I’m pretty sure leveling from 98 to 99 isn’t 10 minutes.
Why are you bitching about it anyhow? YOU get the experience, they DON’T. Is it going to actually kill you to gain experience at no cost? Blame the ten year olds for not doing anything wrong?
Here’s a few options:
1) Turn off the public chat.
2) Don’t play Runescape at all if you’re just going to insult them for adding another open-minded system.
3) Make your own Runescape and see how that goes.

I forget about this blog for two days and I come back to fighting? For shame! For. Shame.
I wanna make my own Runescape.

So a dude:
I don’t know about you…but I started cutting at woodcutting level 1…how about you.
I’m very aware that actually leveling from 98 to 99 takes more then ten minutes…being level 93 woodcutting myself. Still I could go find someone to assist me and have level 99 in oh ten seconds or so.
Oh, and why would they need experience if they can just walk up to any player and have level 85 or 99 in a skill just by asking. Why would they ever need to buy anything. Shoot if you want full rune you can just by 13 rune bars find a high enough level and you can smith your own full rune. That will save you 50k per shot…then you can sell it.
And for your questions:
1. Unfortunately, I have to sell those yews and because most people don’t want to be my friend, they just want to know how many yews I have, I need public chat on. Otherwise I’d turn it off and be on private chat all the time.
2. So you’ve never had a problem with anything Jagex has done, or are you just being hypocritical because you like this update and it helps you, but you don’t think anyone should have a problem with it.
3. Oh, and if anyone wants to make their own Runescape, or clone of the game (digging up linky) http://moparscape.org/smf. There you go…found it on ubuntu forums…
There are actually ton of programs to make your own Runescape online.
So my problem with the assist system still stands. Why would I like a system that reward people for being lazy and not playing enough to gain the levels themselves and invalidates all the work I’ve done to get as far as I have?
November 11th, 2007 at 6:01 pm
As far as making your own Runescape, I meant coding it. Doing what they have to do to make the game right. Do we do that? Runescape and Jagex is entitled to do as they wish.
I’m not having any fusses with you. I don’t hate you as a person, I don’t have a problem with you at all. But you’re looking at the system the wrong way.
It’s a system to help people in need, and you’re forgetting the assisted aren’t gaining experience at all. So getting that fast experience off of another player isn’t in the realm of possibility. 99 is still 99, no matter how you look at it, it’s still a challenge.
Plus, aren’t we excluding other major skills as well? Skills which we need for quests? Have we so forgotten those that we cannot raise with the assist system? This does not compromise Runescape entirely, it does not make Runescape one easy game. The assist system is just something so you can, maybe help a few friends once in a while, gain some experience for yourself by having minions work, or maybe just for your own personal benefit as well. The fact that it may make Runescape overstocked on items may increase in the demand as well, since Fletching is on that list, I believe.
It may boost Fishing, increasing the stock of fish, but it will increase the demand from cookers, as both are on that list as well.
Magic is on there, Runecrafting is on there, Mining, Smithing, Hunter, Farming, Herblore, Construction, all these things require items from other parts of the assist system. It doesn’t compromise the market at all. It may make money an easier object to gain, but does that stop you? You’re the supplier.
Counter-points to your answers are:
1) that you can pretty much just walk into World 1, shout out how many yews you have, and someone will come running prompt on buying.
2) I hardly play Runescape myself, I may dabble in the skill of Thieving occasionally. The assist system is nothing of importance to me. I don’t have any problems with it personally.
3) It’s illegal to do that, really. Jagex being a corporation and Runescape it’s product, it should be in no way manipulated as such.
Might I remind you that they still have to look at the screen, walk to the bank occasionally, and maybe click a few times. Does that make them any less than we already are? That’s pretty much what we do in Runescape anyway. Walk around, bank, and click a hell lot of times.

So I waited to post, and I’m glad I did. Jagex fixed the assistance skills that are resource gathering. This was my primary problem with the system. I am now satisfied with it as they have banned woodcutting, mining, and fishing from the list. Although, smithing has been left off…I still think the system is 10 times better than it was last week.
